— still figuring it out

James M. Jones is an American artist working across painting, drawing, and mixed media. His work centers on how identity is formed over time—through accumulation, pressure, repetition, and the physical evidence of lived experience.

Much of his approach comes from years of hands-on construction work, where materials are understood through use rather than theory. Wood, plastic sheeting, tape, and paint are not just surfaces in his work—they are structural elements. They carry weight. They resist. They hold memory.

Jones first developed a layered visual language in the late 1990s and early 2000s through digital work. That early exploration of distortion, fragmentation, and image-building continues today in his physical practice. What has changed is the material presence: marks are built, covered, scraped back, and rebuilt again.

Figures often emerge incomplete or partially obscured. The work does not aim to tell a clear narrative. Instead, it holds moments of tension and restraint—reflecting how identity is shaped slowly, through endurance rather than clarity.

Jones lives and works in Dallas, Texas, with his wife Jenna and their dog, Otis.
